BOTANICAL COW HOUSE
The beautiful family who moved into this San Francisco historic landmark, the Ortman-Shumate house, had a vision of a home that embodied their effortless mix of styles and tastes. With Italian and Indian family ancestry and a love of a broad diversity of antiques eras, silhouettes, colors, and patterns, it was an absolute joy for our team to create each room, which layered up to an overall energy throughout the house that feels like easy breathing – as if these spaces were composed just yesterday, but also across decades, all at once.
While we were lucky to be able to simply adorn the bathrooms, we executed a gut renovation and reimagining of the kitchen, adding as well, necessary built-in seating and storage in the breakfast nook and entry hall. It has been our privilege to serve as the design custodians of this preserved and beloved specimen of Italianate Victorian residential architecture. (And if you were wondering about the Historical Cow, the Shumate family’s cow who lived on this property was believed to be the last San Francisco city cow in the neighborhood!).
