RAINBOW HOUSE
If ever there were a family who was meant to live inside a technicolor fantasia, it would be our vibrant clients – a San Francisco family of four who’ve declared this Edwardian house their dream home! We were absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to design their main hosting floor and central staircase, transforming via tiles and color and contemporary swooping lines, an otherwise stately and formal (and very off-white!) developer-restored manse.
The design brief was, simply, “Rainbow.” And thus we made it so. Our ombré rainbow stair runner melts into an abstracted geode rug in the foyer, which is joined with hand-painted wall geodes that even jump onto the furniture, by artist Caroline Lizarraga. The hot pink living room (which, by the way, was conceived well before announcements of the Barbie movie!) transitions dramatically to the denim-blue dining room, with custom Porter Teleo wallpaper and drapes. These indigo hues were derived as an homage to the family’s previous home, which had a soft blue dining nook. The custom S-shape dining table was inspired by the Dr. Seuss Whoville Christmas table, and meant to maximize seating (18 fit comfortably!) and intimate conversations in a square-ish room. And in the kitchen, in which we also created a new mudroom-pantry, we utilized blocks of tile and paint (plus new colorful sinks) to breathe polychrome life to an otherwise perfectly-functional kitchen.
